About the 7th Murder by Numbers Film Festival
The 7th Murder by Numbers Film Festival will be held this Fall. Through these films we try to guide Taiwanese society to further think about these questions: Why do we allow extreme violence to exist in an era of singing peace? Why do we allow an unreliable judiciary to take charge of life and death in a country where there are endless unjust cases and people's trust in the judiciary is extremely low? Why do we think the death penalty can uphold justice and ensure social stability? Is the result of the cruel and abusive use of the death penalty just a vicious circle that allows the death penalty to nurture a more brutal next generation? What does murder/death penalty mean to each of us, and is the death penalty system really necessary to exist in a civilized country?
The theme of this year's Murder by Numbers Film Festival in English is “The State vs. You and Me”. The people empower the state to govern, and at the same time transfer the power of life and death to the state, giving the state the right to "govern" the evils of society with deprivation of human life. However, the state is also composed of the people. When the state has the ultimate power of the death penalty, it is equivalent to obtaining the authorization of the whole people to deprive individual people of their right to life. The country is composed of you and me, and we authorize the country to punish crimes with the death penalty. However, when the country executes the death penalty, every person seems to be cut off from the state and the death penalty system, and the evil people who grow out of our society have nothing to do with us.
